It was legal and accepted although not as prevalent in the north where he lived in Philadelphia. He was a slave owner but only had two slaves which were his personal servants. He was instrumental in working with John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in writing the Declaration of Independence. However, it was he who eventually persuaded John Adams to drop the passage from the draft of the constitution in response to Edwards Rutledge refusal to sign if that passage remained in the document. Of the 39 people who signed the consitution, 11 owned slaves in some way or another.
