Cape Catastrophe in South Australia was named by Matthew Flinders. The area was notorious for shipwrecks in the nineteenth century, but the first recorded shipwreck occurred while Flinders was circumnavigating the Australian continent.
As well as the Investigator, Flinders had a small cutter which was used for landing parties. In February 1802, the cutter's captain went to search for water with a crew of eight. None of them returned. Another man was sent to serach for the cutter, but he returned alone, finding only evidence that the cutter had been wrecked on the rocks. Despite searching the coastline extensively, no survivors from the cutter were found: hence Flinders' naming of the cape Cape Catastrophe.
In 1867, the Cape Town municipality divided the city into separate districts. The area of district six was named the sixth district of Cape Town. Thus it got its name district six.
The Cape Of Good Hope was at first called The Cape Of Storms by the Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Diaz who found it, but sadly the king of Portugal wanted more traders to come to Africa so he renamed it The Cape Of Good Hope. sadly, though, most of the people (if not all) who came died to do the storms.

His name was Bartolomeu Dias and he did it around 1487.He named it the good hope cape after passing it, as before it was called The monsoons cape because of the heavy storms in that area.
About 1600, a Spanish map called the area "Cape of Faire". (Most likely because of the dangerous shoals at the mouth of the river - Ed Shaw's note.) In 1651 a John Farrer map refers to Cape Feare and an Indian Fort near the mouth of the river. (I think this was later changed to Cape Fear and it is called that today. Capt. Ed Shaw)
