AnswerAccording to The Bible, God rejected Saul because, after defeating the Amaleks, he had not totally destroyed all their cattle, as God, speaking through Samuel, told him he should. Samuel then secretly annointed David, an unknown shepherd boy (1 Sam 16:13), although this did not really make David king. This has a ring of authenticity about it, because Samuel could have wanted to be the real power behind the throne, and King Saul had disobeyed him.

However, there is no evidence that either Samuel or Saul was a real, historical person, and only circumstantial evidence that there may have been a leader called David. There is no evidence that this passage reflects historical reality, and scholars are divided on whether there ever was a United Kingdom of Israel and Judah. The story of Samuel annointing David may have arisen for reasons other than those stated in the Bible.

Why was david anointed king while saul still ruled over the israelites?

Because Saul was not completely obedient to God. In the battle against Amalek, which God had commanded explicitly, Saul didn't finish the job (1 Samuel ch.15; and see also Exodus ch.17 and Deuteronomy 25:17-19).

Why was there a dispute about who would be king after David died?

Saul's family line thought that they should still inherit being king even though David was anointed by God to be the next king. So when after Saul and Jonathan and several others of Saul's sons were murdered in battle, Saul's son Ishbosheth took his place while David was king in Hebron for seven and a half years. Then he finally became king over all Israel, stationed in the captured city Jerusalem, for 33 years. so he was a king for a total of 40 years.

Who reigned Israel between Saul and David?

Ish Bosheth, the son of Saul, ruled the northern tribes for two years after Saul, while David at the same time ruled Judah and later became king over all the Israelites.

How did the Israelites and most of their leaders respond to the prophets and their teachings about God?

Many of the Israelites served God and obeyed the prophets, while others ignored them. The people of Judah were more righteous than the Ten Tribes; and some generations (such as those of David, Hezekiah and Josiah) were better than others.

Why do you think king david allowed Solomon to take his throne while he was still alive?

It's because Adonijah, one of David's sons, had appointed himself king. In order to save the life of Solomon and himself, David appointed him as king.
