Edward The Confessor was and still is known as Edward III, the Confessor was a nickname that he received during his reign.
Apologies for this but, Edward the Confessor and Edward III are not the same person. Edward the Confessor 1003-1066; Edward III 1312-1377. The former has the distinction of not making clear whether Harold Godwineson (Earl of Wessex) or William the Bastard (Duke of Normandy) should succeed him. His lack of clarity resulted in the brutal Norman conquest of England.
Edward III, father of the Black Prince, was king in the early years of the Hundred Years War, fought between England and France.
The attachment of a number, after the name of the king, was a post Anglo-Saxon device. Prior to the conquest kings were known by their name, often followed by 'son of'.
William's claim was that he was the first cousin of the late King (Edward the confessor
For the first years of his reign English political life was dominated by Godwin of Wessex, Leofric of Mercia and Siward of Northumbria. Godwin became the most important of these when Edward married his daughter Edith in 1045. Godwin hoped that his daughter would have a son but Edward had taken a vow of celibacy and it soon became clear that the couple would not produce an heir to the throne.
Answer. William the conqueror was the King in 1066 but he had to fight for his crown with Harold Godwinson, in the battle of Hastings. But the people of England hated William so he killed over 10,000 people. x
Well after Edward the confessor died there were 3 people who thought that they should be king as he did not have any children to reign. Harold Godwinson, Harald Hardraada and William of Normandy (becomes William the Conqueror). Harold Godwinson crowned himself about 3 days after Edward the Confessor died. Then the 2 other men fought. First Harald Hardraada and Harold Godwinson (he won this battle) and it was called the Battle of Standford Bridge. Then Harold Godwinson and William of Normandy and William won. That battle was called the battle of Hastings as it was down south in Hastings. Then when William won he crowned himself on Christmas day! He then became William the Conqueror! Hope this helped! Sorry if I got some things wrong because I'm only 10! :) :)
Harold Godwinson - Powerful English noble and was promised the throne by Edward the Confessor. Harold Haardrada - Promised the throne by an earlier king and was joined by Harold Godwinson brother tostig.
William's claim was that he was the first cousin of the late King (Edward the confessor
First was Edward the Confessor and after he died it was Harold Godwinson and then William the Conqueror.
Edward spent the first part of his life in Normandy.

The battle of Hastings was fought over who was to become king after Edward the Confessor died: Harold Godwinson or William the Conquerer. William was Edward the Confessor's first cousin once removed, and Harold was Edward t.C.'s brother-in-law.
First
Since the reign of William the Conqueror in 1066 there have been eight kings of England who were named Edward. But actually, there were eleven English kings named Edward. The first was Edward the Elder. The second was Edward the Martyr. The Third was Edward the Confessor. Edward I was the fourth, but was called the first because he was the first with that name after the Norman Invasion. Then followed the rest, up to Edward VIII.
Well if you mean long before, King Cnut but if you mean straight beffore, Edward the Confessor.

Duke William of Normandy became King William I of England. This was the start of the Norman Dynasty. William claimed the crown of England because it was promised to him by Edward The Confessor.
The first member was Carlisle, the second was Edward.
Pope Alexander III humbled King Henry II of England for the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170, to whom he was unusually close, later canonizing St. Thomas Becket in 1173. This was the second English saint canonized by Alexander, the first being Edward the Confessor in 1161. - from Wikipedia
