Because a Fijian commoner was accused by the Americans for burning an American house down. To solve the problems and debt to the American, the American decided to take most of the land as to payment of the loss of his house and belongings. Ratu Cakobau, a fijian chief disagreed and pleaded to the British in Levuka to do something. Instead of the American occupaying and claiming Fiji, Queen Victoria agreed to pay the damages to the American and protected Fiji from being attacked. That was how Fiji got ceeded to the UK.
The British did not take Fiji forcefully. It was Ratu Seru Cakobau who asked her Majesty Queen Victoria to take Fiji before the American claims it as their own and a state. Therefore Queen Victoria agreed to the plead of the Fijian Chiefs and took Fiji as her own, moreover Fiji uses pounds and shillings and also the Union Jack Flag as its own flag until 1970 when Fiji asked Britain to get Independence and was accepted.
