Lee was hoping to take pressure off of the siege of Vicksburg, hoping the North would recall troops from the West to counter his threat. He also hoped that by putting pressure on the North, he could show that the South was still robust and not ready to collapse, as some in the North hoped. He wanted to force Washington to sue for peace under military threat, and he wanted to take some of the strain off of Virginia, which had borne the brunt of the fighting in the Eastern Theater of Operations since 1861. By capturing provisions, he also hoped to supplement his meager material resources.
(A) General Lee wanted to take the pressure off General Grant's attack on Vicksburg, Miss. which would give the Union complete control of the Mississippi river, if Gen. Grant won the battle, (which he did). Gen. Lee hoped an attack in Penn. would take Union soldiers from Vicksburg, and that if Gen. Lee defeated Gen. Meade in Penn., then (B) Gen. Lee could attack Washington DC. (like the English did in the War of 1812), and Gen. Lee might even force President Lincoln to surrender the war against the South. (C) There were not a lot of Union soldiers in Penn. and an attack there by Gen. Lee would be totally unexpected, and give Gen. Lee the element of surprise.
Gettysburg
At Gettysburg, Pennsylvania :) (A+)
Gen. Joe Johnston, the confederate general, was wounded and command was given to gen. Robert E. Lee, and the union command was gen. Gorge B. McClellan.
The first time (September 1862), he was hoping to force Maryland into the Confederacy. The second time (June 1863), he was wanting to invade the prosperous state of Pennsylvania, to feed and equip his barefoot troops.
Gettysburg
Yes, the union won at Gettysburg. Gen. Meade forced Gen. Lee to retreat out of Pennsylvania.

he wanted to Gen. Lee hoped than if he attacked the Union in the North, then it would be unexpected, and he would not be facing the usual large Union soldiers that were all over the South. Attacking Maryland and Pennsylvania were almost the only times that the South fought major battles in the North, (although there was a battle in Vermont). Gen. Lee took chances because the Union had more men, more equipment, and more industry. "When your back is against the wall", some people take chances and win.
gen robert e. lee decided to invade -------when gen. george mcClellan was forced to retreat near richmond.?

Gen- Fitzhugh Lee and Staff - 1898 was released on: USA: July 1898
Gen. Omar Bradley and Gen. Bernard Montgomery led the two main parts of the invading forces.
Gen. Robert E. Lee's defeat by the Army of the Potomac forced his Confederate forces to retreat; they never recovered. Lee was emboldened by his victory in Chancellorsville, Va., in May 1863 and hoped to solidify his seeming advantage in Gettysburg. He was unprepared for the ferocity and strength of the Union forces under the newly named Potomac Army commander, Gen. George G. Meade.
The two battles - far apart - that ended on the same day. Gettysburg, which ended Lee's hopes of invading Pennsylvania. And Vicksburg, which liberated the Mississippi, ending the war in the West.
Antietam/Sharpsburg (Sept. 17th 1862). It was Lee's first attempt at invading Pennsylvania. His second attempt ended at Gettysburg (July 3rd 1863).
