Jonah wanted God to punish the Ninevites for being such a horrible nation, but when the Ninevites asked for forgiveness and God spares Nineveh. Johan felt that Nineveh was beyond saving, he thought they were heathens and that the Jews shouldn't have to share their God with someone different then him and his culture.

1) He was apprehensive that he might be accused of being a false prophet (since he had predicted the destruction of Nineveh [Rashi commentary]).

2) According to tradition, his prophecy had chiefly been meant (by God) to impress the Ten Israelite Tribes. If they would take to heart how the people of Nineveh repented, they might do the same.

Jonah suspected that most of the Ten Tribes were likely to ignore the lesson.

Jonah suspected that most of the Ten Tribes were likely to ignore the lesson and this would hasten the destruction of their land. That's why he had tried to avoid conveying God's prophecy to Nineveh.
