Julius Caesar was the hero of the people and a villain in the eyes of his political enemy. They saw him as an ambitious man who would not stop at nothing to gain popularity and power. They also thought that he would dismantle the institutions of the Rome Republic and make himself a king, which to the Republicans meant tyranny .

In Dante's Inferno, Brutus and Cassius are classed with Judas Iscariot as the worst villains in history because they betrayed a close friend. Of course, the perspective Dante was working from was that popularized by Caesar's nephew the emperor Augustus, who arranged to have Caesar be deified and viewed as a hero.

In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, on the other hand, Brutus is the tragic hero who the same man who will become the emperor Augustus calls "the noblest Roman of them all".`Brutus strikes a blow as a noble and selfless service to the state, but is overwhelmed by a load of sleazy politicians out for the main chance, including even his partner Cassius.

No doubt the truth is somewhere between these perspectives.

Who was the main villain in Julius Caesar?

Whether someone is a villain or a hero in Julius Caesar is a matter of perspective. If you sympathize with Brutus and Cassius's opposition to dictators like Caesar and a return to a more democratic form of government, then they are the heroes and Caesar and Antony are the villains. But if you consider the conspirators to be reactionary terrorists who try to overthrow the government of Rome by the murder of one of its most talented and admirable citizens, then Caesar and Antony are the heroes and Brutus and Cassius are the villains. The play is not committed to either perspective.
