The basic reason for Caesar's assassination was that he had amassed too much power. Because he was dictator for life, it seemed to his enemies that he was close to becoming a king and monarchy was a no-no in ancient Rome.

There were numerous reasons and people thought he simply had gone too far in power grabbing. The Romans as a people were very anti-monarchy, and Caesar began acting like one (in some people's opinion). When the Senate made him Dictator for Life on top of all the other honors they gave him, the conspirators acted, thinking they were saving the Republic.
