President Harry Truman told members of the U.S Navy and air force that they should help defend South Korea. He did this before actually getting the order approved by the Congress. He called the U.S involvement in Korea police action instead of war.
Truman didn't know what to call a NON-Declared war, so he chose that phrase.
to protect the Independence of South Korea.
Because US-led UN intervention initially meant to contain the DPRK army from taking over the entire Korean Peninsula.
It was officially declared by the President of the U.S. as a police action so that the public would not have to go through, and be enraged about, another war so soon after World War II
Never confronted with a limited war before, he didn't know what else to call it; other than to infer, "America is the world's policeman."
It was referred as police action because they feared it would trigger another World War. It was somewhat a military action undertaken without a formal declaration of war.
The police action in Korea

The Korean War, also known as The Police Action in Korea, or The Korean Conflict. Make no mistake, it was a war. 1950-1953
No. The US was a major part of the UN "police action" that primarily sought to repel the North Korean army that invaded South Korea in June, 1950. Under a UN resolution, troops from several countries were sent to fight. However, the advance of these troops into the North led to a second invasion, this time by communist China, in October, 1950. These forces were also repelled during five separate attacks through 1952. Neither the US or any UN member declared war on North Korea, which continued to depend on support from the Soviet Union and China.
The average man & women on the streets in the 1950s called it, "oh...you mean that war in Korea..." It was the worlds first "limited war" (limited to conventional weapons only). The atomic bomb was only 5 years old when Korea erupted. The A-Bomb created the cold war...thus the "limited war."

The police action in Korea
Yes, Korea was a major war, but called a "police action" by the UN
The Russians boycotted the meeting at which the UN approved the police action in Korea . They were protesting the recognition of the Chiang Kai-shek government as the legal government of China.
Harry S. Truman
A police action action is fighting a war that has not been declared by congress,or any government. Viet Nam is one example, Korea was another. Politically, it sounds less messy than "War" but people still fought and died.
The Korean War was actually a Police Action that involved the United Nations and North Korea. North Korea was Chinese and Russian backed. They invaded South Korea. This argument was the result of the Cold War and the bad feelings from that. Both Countries are really still at war.
The Korean War, also known as The Police Action in Korea, or The Korean Conflict. Make no mistake, it was a war. 1950-1953
The invasion of the Republic of Korea by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (Noth by South).
To stop the communist forces from reuniting Korea under a communist government
It is correct grammatically, but not idiomatic. We say the police were called to TAKE action, to GET INTO action, or to BECOME ACTIVE.
