∙ 15y agoThe Mexican Lorenzo de Zavala was a brilliant politician and statesman who left Mexico and went to New York and then on to Texas to become an integral part of that state's history. For a number of years he had been active in the politics of Mexico, but had resigned a diplomatic position after he became unhappy with the tactics of General Santa Anna. de Zavala was a key to Texas statehood, and had lived for a brief time with Steven F. Austin. Though he had originally been a supporter of Mexican Federalism, he changed his position and supported the formation of Texas, going on to help draft the constitution of the Republic of Texas.
