Marc Antony was a relative of Julius Caesar and one of his best military commanders during his conquest of Gaul. After the death of Caesar he became one of the leaders of the supporters of Caesar. He was one of the three members of the second triumvirate, the three-man body which fought and defeated the forces of the assassins of Caesar and took charge of Rome and her territories - the other members were Octavian and Lepidus. He took charge of the territories in the east. He became the lover of Cleopatra VII of Egypt and had three children with her. He partitioned the east, giving territories to their children and to Cleopatra. Octavian declared war of Cleopatra as an excuse to fight Marc Antony who, he knew, would come to her aid. This was a civil war which was fought to decide who would become the sole ruler of Rome. Marc Antony and Cleopatra were defeated and committed suicide.
