Why was Martin Luther important?

Martin Luther is an important figure in history. He became fed up with the excesses of the Catholic church, and decided to form his own Christian denomination, Lutheranism. Martin Luther King, Jr. is named after Martin Luther.

Martin Luther is famous for starting the Protestant religion when he discovered the Roman Catholic Church was making money from people through indulgences. This was a system that made people buy a piece of paper saying that God had forgiven them. The bigger the crime the higher the price.

Martin Luther didn't agree with the way the priests were acting so he wrote 95 reasons why they were wrong and hammered them to the door of his local church. When the pope found out he was excommunicated. He and the people that agreed with him went to start a new religion and since it was started by a protest it was called the Protestant religion.

He also organized many of the massive protests was arrested numerous times most famously in Birmingham because he wrote "A letter from Birmingham jail". He marched many times, around Washington, Detroit, the march against fear which went through many places in the south. He was also shown across the world doing this, being attacked, threatened and arrested without physically defending himself. Simply put many people believe that without him blacks could still be segregated today.
