Mary Jane Grant Seacole (1805 - 14 May 1881) was awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit in 1991, and in 2004, she was voted the greatest black Briton. Her autobiography, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands (1857), outlined her role in the Crimean War (1853-56) where she offered rest, nursing and herbal medications to the British soldiers.
