The Eastern part of the State was acquired from Texas as a part of the Compromise of 1850 following the Mexican-American War. That war and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo resulted in the aquistion of California, much of Arizona and New Mexico. The final portions were purchased from Mexico in the form of the Gadsden Purchase, which established the Southern border of New Mexico and the current State of Arizona. Finally, the Western half of the State was used to form Arizona Territory in 1863.
New Mexico became a United States territory as a result of the Gadsden Purchase in 1854. The United States agreed to pay $10 million to Mexico for a 29,670 square mile are that later became New Mexico and part of Arizona. The land was purchased in order to build a railroad and help to resolve conflicts that still lingered after the end of the Mexican-American War.
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American War. In accordance with the treaty provisions, Mexico ceded to the United States California and a large area comprising roughly half of New Mexico, most of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, and parts of Wyoming and Colorado. It also established the Rio Grande as a boundary for Texas. The U.S. payed $15 million to Mexico and agreed to pay off the claims of American citizens against Mexico up to $3.25 million.
The U.S. acquired the New Mexico Territory as a result of the Mexican-American War. The Territory eventually became the U.S. state of New Mexico.
Those territories were acquired from Mexico, first during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and then the southern parts of both Arizona and New Mexico during the Gadsden Purchase (1853).
