Plymouth holds a special role in American history. Rather than being entrepreneurs like many of the settlers of Jamestown, the citizens of Plymouth were fleeing religious persecution and searching for a place to worship their god as they saw it.
The short answer is that the Plymouth Colony was established primarily for religious freedom and secondarily for financial profit.
The Plymouth Colony was established by two groups of people whose reasons for being involved differed quite a lot.
The Pilgrims, and the various people who were with them, were the larger group. They were religious nonconformists in England and had been persecuted as such. After trying to move to Holland, they decided to go to America, so they could be free to practice their religion as they wished without interference.
The smaller group was made up of people associated with a commercial organization called the Company of Merchant Adventurers of London. This business financed the voyage to America with the hope of making some sort of profit. It sent its representatives to make sure the colony operated with their interests in mind.
The Pilgrims received a charter from King James to settle in North America. They believed their way of religion would be safe in the New World. Their ship went way off course and they landed in Massachusetts.
