There are three saints named Pelagia.

The first St. Pelagia, died ca. 311 CE, virgin and martyr, is also known as Pelagia of Antioch, Syria. St. Pelagia was a 15 year old girl living in Antioch and became caught up in the persecutions of the Christians in the reign of Diocletian in the early 4th Century CE. When Roman soldier showed up to arrest her, Pelagia threw herself from a rooftop to perserve her virginity. Her plunge into the sea killed her instantly. Pelagia's existence is confirmed by the writings of both Sts. Ambrose and John Chrysostom, and she is listed among the virgin martyrs of the Canon of the Mass of the Ambrosian rite of Milan, Italy. Her feast day is 9 June.

The second Pelagia, the Penitent, is known from Christian legend. This second Pelagia was a dancer living at Antioch, Syria. She is reputed to have been converted to Christianity by Bishop Nonnus of Edessa after hearing one of his sermons. Dressed as a man, she traveled to Jerusalem and lived as a hermit on the Mount of Olives until her death. Her feast day is 8 October.

The third Pelagia of Tarsus, is also found in sacred tradition. This Pelagia was a reputed virgin forcibly betrothed to a son of Emperor Diocletian. When Pelagia refused both the son and the emperor, she was roasted to death in a red-hot bull of brass. Her feast day is 4 May.

St. Pelagia was recognized as a saint due to her life of repentance and piety after a previous life of sin. She converted to Christianity, lived a life of prayer and penance, and eventually became known for her virtue and devotion, which led to her recognition as a saint in the Christian tradition.
