Stalin, who was suffering severe losses to the Nazi war machine needed the Allies, specifically the U.S. and Britain to open up a second front so the German Army (whose official name is The Wermacht, by the way) would have to take troops away from the Eastern Front, thus alleviating stress on the Red Army.

Soviet forces were alone in the ground war with Germany. A Second Front would greatly reduce the number of troops and material the Wehrmacht could muster against the Eastern Front. The Soviet Union was part of the Allied powers--as were the United States and Britain. He pushed the U.S. and British Forces to open a "second front" by landing troops in France and driving towards Germany from the west. Stalin wanted a second front because it would split up the German troops and lessen pressure on the Soviets. Eisenhower and Churchill debated about the location, and after changes, it ended up at the beaches at Normandy, in the D-Day operation.

Because it would force the Germans to fight on two fronts thus reducing their effectiveness.
