Thailand was a natural dividing line between the colonies of France and Britain,

to the west and south the British ruled Burma and Malaysia, to east and north the French ruled Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.

The two countries signed a treaty, agreeing that neither would try and colonize Thailand.
