He was the Lord Chancellor of England. When Henry VIII wanted to break from the Catholic Church & start the Anglican Church, Thomas More opposed it, & was subsequently Martyred by being beheaded.
Thomas More was killed because he opposed the king on the matter of royal divorce, and refused to swear the Oath of Supremacy which declared the king the head of the Church in England. He was martyred for his refusal to bend his religious beliefs to the king‘s political needs.
Historians are divided over this. Some believe that he was either a smarmy, ruthless and calculated man. Others say he was a friend of Henrys, and was divided on whether to serve his king and friend, or stay true to his religion. He also burnt many on the stake, if that helps. :)
Henry VIII was opposed by many, most notably Thomas More and John Fisher who were both executed because of their opposition.
Lately it seems that there is more attention to foreign affairs as opposed to dealing with the many issues facing our own people in the US. It's time Congress focuses more efforts on our own country - we have starving people, too.

Topia means 'place' but could be interpreted as 'somewhere' as opposed to Utopia which means 'no place' or 'nowhere'. Utopia was the name of Thomas More's work about an ideal place as opposed to real places. Utopia is originally derived from the greek ou (not) + topos (place) which then got into Latin.

He is known for his unwavering faith, integrity, and moral courage, as well as his opposition to the Protestant Reformation and refusal to accept Henry VIII as head of the Church of England. St. Thomas More was executed in 1535 for refusing to swear an oath acknowledging the king's supremacy over the Church.
The word opposed can mean one of two things. The first meaning to put and ends to; the second meaning to have conflict or go against. One more thing that i want to add on as the question is related to the Nazi opposing efforts of the allied approach. Nazi were stranded from all the sides because of the British, American and Soviet troops on the either side of the border. The demolition of Italian monarchy held Hitler from any further efforts of world domination.
