The Death Rate during the First World War was higher than it had been during previous wars was because the tactics employed by the armies that fought in it had not adapted to the technological advances that had been made since the mid-19th century. Artillery, machine guns, and barbed wire increased the power of defensive fortifications and made it difficult for infantry to attack them successfully. Regardless, World War I generals were forced to make direct attacks on fortified formations with infantry, who made up the majority of their armies. The generals never fully appreciated the difficulties involved in such attacks and did not modify their tactics until well into the war.

ANSWER War has almost been a common thing in Europe throughout the centuries. For example the War of the Roses, The l00 years war, The 30 years War. WWI was different because of the new expansions in weaponry. Europeans had never seen a war like this before. With new weapons like the fighter plane, machine guns and tanks, the numbers of those who were killed escelated in comparison to previous wars. Not only did the weapons kill, but the moral was low because of how traumatizing the whole ordeal was with all of the deaths. By world war two the people had better experience and medical procedures to deal with these massive effects of war.
