Its success would have bought more time for Germany, but its failure resulted in a shorter war in Europe. Against the advice of his generals who preferred a smaller attack, Hitler pulled troops from the Eastern Front, raised new divisions, and threw away the last of his tanks in the Ardennes Offensive. It was more of a gamble than a calculated risk for Germany.

Germany had held back some of its forces to save them. At the Bulge the German intent was to push through a weak spot in the Allies lines and make it to Holland to attack the Dutch harbor of Antwerp where much of the Allies supplies were coming in. Also, the drive would split the British and American forces and allow the Germans to surround them and defeat them. When the German advance was halted it signaled the end for Germany. She had used up a lot of her remaining military resources and the last of her reserves going for a big victory that just didn't happen. It was for the Allies the bloodiest battle of the war but it was also a major turning point. The scale and importance of the battle are not fully explained in the popular movies about it.

The battle and its outcome are very complex and this is just the short version.

They lost men and machinery that was almost impossible to replace for Germany at that late stage in the war. Losses the allies sustained were replaced within weeks, the Germans could not match that.
