Slavery is by definition a violation of a persons civil rights. Ending slavery was a moral responsibility.

What kind of international respect would the United States have if slavery was still practiced long after it had gone out of style in the rest of the world? In all seriousness, slavery primarily needed to be eliminated because it was injust and immoral treatment of human beings. In addition, slavery would most likely have ruined the US economy if kept long term, as it would have over time become very expensive. Also, the world would most likely look down on the United States for keeping slaves, a thing which would cause serious problems, not to mention the turmoil within the country.
