Roman clothing expressed the social status of the wearer.
For example Roman jewelry was not only the decorative affair but it served as protection and also men rings were used as seal to sign various ROman documets. Some rings served as treasure keys.
Very common Roman bulla (amulet pouch) served as protection and luck charm.
The Roman men wore tunics with their legs bare. If it was cold they wore trousers and a cloak on top. Still, some Roman men wore togas: a long sheet wrapped a particular way around their body. The Senate wore a toga with a big purple stripe that signified their importance. The women wore a long dress called a stola. Both genders wore sandals.
Like modern people today, the Romans used their clothing to reflect their economic and political status. Roman women changed their hairstyles frequently, and they made wigs from the blonde hair of German slave girls. Some Roman men also wore wigs to cover their baldness. Of course, these were the Romans who could afford it. The poorer Romans, like people today, made do with the clothing they had.
Fashion was important in ancient Rome because it showed a woman's status. Even though the style of clothing did not change, the fabrics and colors did. Also the hairstyles changed considerably, from the simple hairdos of the Augustin era to the elaborate dos of the Flavian era. Fashion and jewelry were so important to the women that the gals demonstrated and forced the repeal of the Oppian Law which limited their use of jewelry and expensive goods.

Over the long period of existence, ancient Rome had many important political leaders. It's a subjective question and based on what I have read about ancient Rome, I believe that Augustus Caesar was the most important political leader in ancient Rome's history. The reasons for my choice of Augustus are many fold. Foremost in my mind is this; After the Civil War with Mark Antony & Cleopatra, Octavian then known as, was the supreme leader of ancient Rome. He brought a great degree of stability to Rome compared to previous times. Augustus had flaws of course but I rank him as the most important leader.
