Federalism gradually vanished because the Federalists were a regional body. The Federalists lived along the coast and in New York City. They were concerned with shipping. As additional states were added to the Union, no new Federalists were added to the government. Federalism offered nothing to the area west of the Appalachians. Since the Federalists had been a group of like minded people instead of a political party, they could not get together to adjust to the changing conditions. So instead of wheel and deal, the movement died.
