George Washington was a demi-god. He was a national hero and was the unanimous choice for President, serving two terms. He could probably have served for life, but refused. He also looked the part, being tall and athletic. Adams was short and fat and won a close election against Jefferson. He did not have the unanimous support the Washington had .

Washington was bigger than life. The 13 colonies adored him and to come after him was a big challenge for Adams. Just in physical looks they were very different. Washington was over six feet tall and very imposing. He didn't say much, but when he did people listened. Adams was about average size at 5'7 and not imposing at all. Yet, he understood the purpose of government and he didn't get along with Washington. Following Washington would have been a challenge for any man.
