It placed the whole of the Mississippi under Union control, denying its use to the Confederacy, and isolating all enemy units to the West of the river.
By ending the war in the West, it enabled Grant to go to the aid of the Army of the Cumberland in Chattanooga.
Vicksburg did. That's why Grant took it.
Northern success in the Siege of Vicksburg was important because the Union had a plan called the anaconda plan. The anaconda plan is when the Union planned to cut the Confederacy in half. By doing this, the Confederacy would not have any way to obtain (get) supplies (food, clothes, weaponry, etc.) When the siege of Vicksburg was a success, the Union was able to carry out the anaconda plan since the Mississippi River is in Vicksburg, and by taking over the Mississippi River, that split the Confederacy into two.
Although General Robert E. Lee and senior members of the Confederate high command were certain that Vicksburg would play no part in the US Civil, Lee's raid into Pennsylvania in late June of 1863, might have helped relieve some pressure on Vicksburg. The problem was that unless Lee was immediately successful, Lee's incursion to the North and into Pennsylvania would not help Vicksburg. That being the case, and the fall of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 could not have been prevented. Only if Lee had won earlier in Pennsylvania and occupied Harrisburg, would Union troops be forced to forget Vicksburg for a time and rescue the North, in a manner of speaking. Secretary of War Seddon saw the propaganda value to the North by taking Vicksburg. With that in mind, Seddon planned an offensive aimed at Helena, Arkansas. The force was led by Major General Theophilus Hunter Holmes. It failed.
The Union did not give up its goal of taking the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg. The first attempt by Admiral Farragut came shortly after the fall of New Orleans. Later, under General US Grant, Major General William T. Sherman was part of Grant's first attempt to take Vicksburg. Sherman took the chance in December of 1862 to battle the Confederates at Chickasaw Bayou. The Rebels were dug in and Sherman's troops were forced to retreat. Casualties for the Union were 1,700 and the Rebels lost 76 men.
Taking place in the summer of 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg featured a number of famous generals and other officers from both sides of the Civil War. One of the most famous of all, General Ulysses S. Grant, was not present, as he was at that time in command of the Union forces besieging the Confederate fortress of Vicksburg in the Western Theater of the conflict.
Ulysses S. Grant was the general who was responsible for taking the Mississippi River. During the Vicksburg Campaign, Grant gained control of the river, a major Confederate defeat. Grant and Confederate Lt. General Pemberton clashed in the Battle of Vicksburg.
No one has a perfect personality, President Lincoln as well. However, he was not shy about admitting mistakes, at least most of the time. When he learned that Vicksburg had surrendered, he wrote to General US Grant a note of congratulations, and included that his own strategy for attacking Vicksburg was wrong. He applauded Grant for taking the initiative and for using his own methods in attacking Vicksburg.
He employed a strategy known as a "siege" to capture the city of Vicksburg.
