He was a big part of it because he invented so many things! He was born in 1806 in Portsmouth. His father was an engineer who had left France in the revolution. Brunel was educated both in England and in France. He went to work for his father. He played the part with his father in planning the Thames Tunnel from Rotherhithe to Wapping. In 1831, his designs won the competition for the Clifton Suspension Bridge across the River Avon. It was not completed until 1864.He was famous for the construction of a network of tunnels, bridges and viaducts for the Great Western Railway. In 1833, he was their chief engineer. His achievements were the viaducts at Hanwell and Chippenham, the Maidenhead Bridge, the Box Tunnel and Bristol Temple Meads Station. Brunel invented the broad gauge in place of the standard gauge on this line. As well as bridges, tunnels and railways, Brunel designed lots of famous ships. He died of a stroke on 15 September 1859.
