Why was it called the great war and not World War 1?

It was called the Great War when the Russians joined the Serbs (Serbia) and when the Germans joined Austria-Hungary as nobody new that the Americans, British, Italiens, etc. would join and simply kept its name throughout the War until afterwards when it was realised that it was a World War.
