Bombers were designed to take off and land on full runways with the assumption that the runway would be long enough to deal with variations in pilot skill and takeoff and landing positions.

Taking off and landing on an aircraft was not as forgiving:

  • Not reaching takeoff speed at the end of the ship meant ditching in the water. There was no opportunity to turn around and try again.
  • Touching down too late on the ship also could mean not stopping in time and ditching in the water.
  • Trying to touch down too early meant hitting the ship.

Yes they can. Aircraft Carriers can handle lots and lots of punishments in order to sink.

Ships that transport aircraft and accommodate take-offs and landings?

aircraft carriers

How can Aircraft Carriers take a lot of punishments?

Becuase Aircraft Carriers are super huge and they can handle lots of powers. Aircraft Carriers don't sink one hit, they sink by taking lots of punishments. They even sink if you aim for the weakest spot or take the anti-shop torpedoes.

Is it easy to sink aircraft carriers?

No because aircraft carriers are so huge and it can handle lots of punishments. Aircraft carriers are incredibly strong. If you fire one missile at it, it still could float and move even up to twelve missiles and the aircraft carrier will take damages and still can move. If you fire several missiles or more, the whole aircraft carrier will sink.

Do aircraft carriers launch off planes?

The planes take-off with a catipulte but they have to be light planes nothing to heavy. Then the plane goes into full throtle flaps up then takes-off

Did the pilots during World War 2 that flew off the navy carriers fall under the army air corp or where they navy?

US Navy Aircraft Carriers normally operated US Navy aircraft flown by US Navy pilots; however sometimes during WW2 these aircraft carriers had US Army Air Force or US Marine Corps aircraft on-board to be flown-off by Army or Marine pilots. This was for ferrying operations. These aircraft would take off from the carriers but land on an airfield. Army pilots were not trained to land on carriers, neither were the Army aircraft equipped for carrier landings. US Marine pilots & Marine aircraft could operate from carriers if necessary, until they could be established at an airfield.

How did aircraft carrier make world war 2 destructive?

The aircraft carrier was a major support in world war 2. Take the battle of Midway for example, almost the WHOLE battle was the carriers launching their aircraft at one another. also, Aircraft carriers made the bombing of japan possible in the middle of the war. (Doolittle raid). They were pretty much the key to winning the war.

Why did the Japanese chose pearl harbor as the first target in their attack?

to take out the Pacific Fleet, especially the aircraft carriers like the Enterprise

Where did japan take off to bomb Pearl Harbor?

They took off from six IJN aircraft carriers which had stationed themselves a few hundred miles north of the Hawaiian Islands. At that time, there were no bombers in the world capable of making a land-based attack on Pearl Harbor.

What are ships that carry lots of combat aircrafts?

The ships that carries so many combat aircrafts are called aircraft carriers because they are designed for carrying warplanes, they are also called warships that has missiles and heavy machine-guns that allows them to fire back against their enemies. Aircraft carriers are the World's biggest warship and it can take lots of punishments to sink. Aircraft carriers are really strong and it is not easy to sink the carrier because they are really huge. Aircraft carriers cannot sink in one hit. The only way to sink it is to find a weakest spot or take the torpedo that does an incredibly powerful damages to bigger combat ships and any other huge ships.

In pearl harbor were there really boats that planes could take off from?
