They added requirements such as owning property and passing literacy tests. Former slaves owned no property and it was illegal to teach them how to read or write. Even if former slaves could read, the tests given to them would likely be rigged somehow, such as being given in the wrong language. The Grandfather clause was another, saying you could not vote unless your grandfather could. It was tied to the above two requirements. Since their grandfathers likely didn't own property nor were able to read, then they didn't qualify to vote either.
Slave codes are strict rules of governing the behavior and punishment of enslaved Africans. Some codes did not allow slaves to leave the plantation without written permissions from the master. Most people in the South at that time farmed and lived off the land, as well as the fact that most slaves only had agricultural skills. Land would allow them to work and make a living. This was however impeded by the development of the"black codes": laws that prohibited negros from owning land or working other than for a plantation owner.
Slaves in the South were not allowed to learn to read or write, gather in groups without supervision, or leave their owner's property without permission. They also were prohibited from owning property, carrying weapons, or testifying in court against a white person.

Slave owners feared that literacy would lead to rebellion or desire for freedom among slaves. By denying slaves education, it was easier to control and maintain power over them. Illiteracy also perpetuated the idea of slaves as inferior and property, reinforcing the institution of slavery.
