Anything is possible. However, it was not probable for peace in Vietnam, due to the ongoing cold war. The Vietnam War was not TOTALLY a war against North Vietnam and the communists in South Vietnam; North Vietnam was a surrogate for the Communist Superpowers. North Vietnam's air defence systems were not manufactured in Hanoi...they were manufactured in Red China (MIG-19/J-6 versions jet fighter planes) & the USSR (MIG-17 & MIG-21 jet fighter planes & SAM missiles/Surface to Air Missiles). Included in that support were: AK-47 assault rifles, SKS semiautomatic carbines, K-54 pistols, artillery, mortars, 122mm rockets, Type 63/PT-76 Amphibious light tanks, T-59/T-54/T-55 medium tanks, trucks, and CHICOM hand-grenades & ammo for all of the above listed weapons. (CHICOM=Chinese Communist). Note-CHICOM hand grenades were stick grenades (looked like WW2 German potato masher grenades).

Prior to Vietnam, few if anyone ever heard of it. After Vietnam, they wished they never heard of it.
Wars prior to Vietnam were ground taking wars (territorial gains). Vietnam was a body count war-a war of attrition.
Vietnam is a communist country since 1975. Prior to 1975 there were two Vietnams; a NORTH and a SOUTH Vietnam. Those two nations fought from about 1955 until 1975, with the US supporting South Vietnam; which was defeated by force of arms on 30 April 1975.
There are several names that were used for Vietnam in the 1800s. The one you are likely thinking of is FRENCH INDOCHINA, but this refers to Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia together as a French colony. Prior to that, it was the independent NGUYEN DYNASTYwhich was sometimes called VIET NAM and other times as DAI NAM. Prior to that, it was part of the TAY SON DYNASTY.
