The Marquis de Sade was jailed for 27 of his 74 year-long life, at different times and for various reasons, and ended his life in a lunatic asylum. He was convicted, and sentenced in absentia to death, for debauchery including sodomy and poisoning protitutes and fled to Italy. Returning France, he hired a bevy of very young girlservants, most whom had to flee (it is said that he stabbed some of them witha jacknife during sexual fantasies. He was arrested in Paris in 1777 and successfully appealed his death sentence, but remained imprisoned until 1790, at first in Vincennes, then in La Bastille, and afterwards in the lunatic asylum of Charenton.
