The idea that people need priests to act on behalf of God and that people could not have a personal relationship with God.
Thanks!!!!
Luther's dissatisfaction with the Church actually stemmed from the selling of Indulgences, these were pieces of paper that absolved people's dead relatives of their sins.
Luther thought it was curious that they were being sold at the same time that St Peters Basilica was being built and the Papacy needed more money.
He began to doubt the sincerity of the church and eventually wrote his 95 theses attacking many aspects of the Church, including Indulgences, Transubstantiation and Priestly corruption. As well as outlining justification by faith alone (having a personal relationship with God)
One answer is because the Church was too rich and all the Priests lived in luxury whilst the villagers lived in huts with barely any food. Another reason is because they didn't lead a holy life and the drunk alcohol and lived with women.
Wikipedia currently lists Martin Luther as: He strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money. He confronted indulgence salesman Johann Tetzel with his Ninety-Five Theses in 1517.
This, however, is not correct, as the Catholic Church has never claimed that anyone could buy freedom from God's punishment for sin. And Fr. Tetzel wa NOT an "indulgence salesman", this is all a perverted view of history based on anti-Catholic proganda.
He was unhappy with them because they were telling people that they could buy their sins away ,so in other words selling indulgences.
The protestant church started by Martin Luther was the Lutheran Church.
The people who were unhappy with the Roman Catholic Church split off from the traditional church and set up what is now the Protestant Churches. One of the main leaders behind this movement was a German named Martin Luther.

His followers. I have been raised Lutheran and I have learned that Martin Luther's original intentions were not at all to break with the Catholic church, he in fact encouraged his followers not to break from the church, he just wanted to change the corruptness of it and focus more on the Bible. The way I understand it to be is that Martin Luther's followers (not Martin Luther, it was after his death) broke from the Catholic church because they recognized the strength of the church itself and were insulted by the fact that the Catholic church excommunicated Luther.
Martin Luther King Jr's father, Martin Luther King, was named after Martin Luther. Martin Luther King Jr was named after his father.
