Experiments in the early 20th century could not be explained by classical physics (developed by Galileo, Newton, etc.). Classical physics worked fine on a larger scale. However, on an extremly small scale it was flawed. Scientist started looking at things on an atomic level. This was the beginning of Quantum mechanics.
