Best Answer

The North had abolished slavery because it did not fit the factory system. Industrial bosses wanted free, mobile skilled labour.

After that, there was a small Abolitionist movement which objected to slavery on moral grounds. The issue bulked-up bigger when the Wilmot Proviso was debated in Congress, declaring that there should be no new slave-states.

The debate moved to the top of the agenda after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, by which ordinary citizens were forced to act as unpaid slave-catchers, and Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' as her response. This best-selling book recruited many more to the cause of Abolitionism.

However it is not true to say that the average Union soldier of 1861 was an Abolitionist, eager to fight against the evils of slavery, and Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation left many Northerners unimpressed.
