The 22nd Amendment was added to limit the amount of terms a President can serve in office. It says that they can serve a total of two terms or no more than ten years. They can serve ten years if the take over for a President from the office of Vice President but if they take over for m ore than two years that counts as a term and they would then only be able to run for one more term.

Because other than FDR (along with a few other presidents which were not successful in re-election after 2 terms) the rest of the presidents followed Washington's precedent and didn't seek re-election after 2 terms. This was followed so that a president wouldn't end up serving like a king or a dictator. FDR changed this, being in office from 1933 until his death 12 years later in 1945. FDR also challenged constitutional limits to his power, from putting American citizens of Japanese decent into "internment camps", to making it illegal to own gold, the basis of American currency since its establishment, not only making it illegal but confiscating it, melting it and making a profit off of the property of American citizens. He also tried to increase the members of the Supreme Court, allowing him to gain a majority of political allies which wouldn't invalidate his unconstitutional legislation. Because of all of this and his abnormally long term in office, it was decided to prevent the Presidency from becoming a virtual Dictatorship again and so the 22nd Amendment was passed.
