It was an issue of "states rights". Some of the states wanted to keep slaves, others wanted to abolish slavery. When the original authors of the constitution forged this nation they wanted the states to be independent entities, almost like separate countries of Europe, but they also wanted these entities to be bound together to "provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare..." When the South wanted to pull out of the Union to continue with the abominable practice of slavery, the rest of the states went to war to keep the Union together.

Well the Civil War Was not just fought over slavery. Actually Slavery was one of the minor problems of the civil war. Yes it is true that it was fought over states rights but many people in history such as Robert E. Lee were against slavery but they were generals for the south because they did not want to fight against they're families or people. I believe it mainly had to do with the distribution of land for instance the battle of Fort Sumter was fought because the Fort Sumter belonged to the north but the south thought it was theirs because it was on Confederate land.
