To form a peaceful alliance. is one answer to be sure. However, the main purpose was to profit in trade with the Dutch and British. The Tribal Alliance traded furs for firearms. They later created a formal alliance with the British. Problems developed when that alliance brought them into conflict with the French and their Native American allies. During the American Revolution, two of the six Tribes in the alliance backed the American rebels, while the majority of the Tribes remained loyal to Britain. The American victory shattered the alliance.
The Iroquois League was a confederacy of Native American Tribes that originated in what is now Northern New York in the 17th century. At the beginning five Tribes were members. They were the:

The group were soon joined by the Tuscarora.
