The Mexican-American War must be looked at through a certain lens to decide whether it was inevitable or indeed could have been evaded. If you look at it from the position of the slave-holders and city-dwellers, they would say yes with gusto. The cities were getting crowded and the land was slowly eroding from the toll that cash crops like tobacco and cotton took on it, which meant slaves would start losing their worth.
However, if you look at it from the view of the abolitionists and scholars with worries, perhaps the Mexican-American war would seem foolish and a waste of time. It takes a very strong person, often a dictator, to control a huge area of land properly, if the US had taken Mexico it's very likely that it would've become separated eventually. Not only that, but many of the war supporters just wanted the war to expand land so they could keep the value of their 'property', or their slaves. In the US, property rights have generally been the first priority and indeed base of the constitution, and if the slaves were to be seen as property then the government would have to support the Mexican-American war.
