After a period of ministry, St Peter went to Rome, as did St Paul and many other Christians. Rome was pretty much the most powerful city in the world at that time.
A large community of Christians grew in Rome, and St Peter was martyred there - crucified upside down because he said that he was not worthy to die in the same manner as his Lord. In Matthew 16 verse 18, Christ is recorded as saying "And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
So Peter was the Christian leader appointed by Christ Himself. He died in Rome, which was the capital of the most powerful nation on earth. So that is how the word "Roman" came about in respect of the Church. The word "Catholic" simply means "Universal" . The church was universal right from the day of Pentecost, but after the Roman Emperor Constantine became converted to Christianity, he declared it to be the universal religion of the Roman Empire. And Christianity spread as far as Roman soldiers marched.
Christianity was a difficult concept for the Romans because they had many gods, and indeed, the Roman Emperor was worshipped as a god too. The idea of there being only one god was completely foreign to them.
