Protestantism came to Switzerland. In many places in Switzerland the people started reading The Bible and became Protestants. The Presbyterian Church came about when some cantons in Switzerland became republics. At the same time they fired their nobility, they fired their bishops. They also created a church run by republican government. So they created a church run by Presbyters, also known as elders, or in non church language, representatives. Church organization copied government organization. (Roman Catholic Church Government does the same. When Emperor Constantine established the Roman Catholic Church he copied the government established by Emperor Diocletian. That is why the Roman church uses the Diocese as a basic unit. Otherwise, it would never name a unit of government after that evil emperor!)
