The Torah is written for a few reasons:

-- Jews are commanded to study it.

-- In contrast to other religious movements and practices, the Jewish holy book

was never the exclusive property of a privileged priesthood, who then preached

it to illiterate commoners. Since it came into existence, the Torah was to be

available and accessible to every individual, and was to be publicly recited

during community prayer several times each week.

-- The Torah explicitly commands that it should be written. In the plain text

of Deuteronomy, the commandment is that every individual is to write his own

Torah.
