1. Could not invade NORTH Vietnam (what good would this have done anyway?)
2. Could not use nuclear weapons (what good would this have done anyway?)
3. Could not isolate the war from re-supply
4. Ultimately, it wasn't a war. It was the need to suppress a popular rebellion and permanently govern an a resentful and hostile colony. This was not in keeping with what we thought being American was all about.Probably due to some people not being alive in the 1960s and 1970s (then they would have seen the news on television); or someone that never studied history (nor read any books, magazines, or watched documentaries on television...not that they are totally accurate, but at least they convey the basic information (sometimes), or, and this is probably what is actually the case: The person is just pulling your leg (joking about it).
Explanation: The whole world (that had electrical power) witnessed the escape from Saigon; the helicopters crashing into the ocean after trying to land on US Navy aircraft carriers, NVA tanks crashing thru the South Vietnamese capital's front gates...NVA troops hoisting their national flag over the South's capital...etc. All occurring in April 1975. So if someone doesn't really believe North Vietnam won the war (ever so clearly on world wide television) they have to be totally ignorant or someone that likes to pull pranks.
There is no winner in WAR. People die. Politicians lie and soldiers die.
Air war over North Vietnam. Ground war in South Vietnam; Riverine war in South Vietnam.
Yes. Vietnam was a French colony. They lost a Vietnam War and were thrown out of Vietnam before America tried to win a war in Vietnam. America also lost a Vietnam War.
The Vietnam war from 1959 to 1975.
Vietnam War is a civil war because it was North Vietnam vs South Vietnam.
Because it was an unwinnable war. They didn't pull out they were defeated and ran.
Unwinnable and a quagmire.
There is no winner in WAR. People die. Politicians lie and soldiers die.
Vietnam was too long, too costly, and without widening the war with Laos and Cambodia and risking a fight with the Red Chinese or Soviet Union (as did happen in Korea)...the war was unwinnable.
As north Vietnam invaded South Vietnam, and the city of Saigon, so Kennedy sent troops to fight the Ho Chi min army. A growing body of evidence shows he planned to withdraw from Vietnam, realizing that the liberation movement in Vietnam was too strong and that U.S. interests would not be served by a long protracted and unwinnable war.
Fighting an unwinnable war in Afghanistan.
tet offensive / living-room war
He wanted a "special war" to be fought with "special forces." This was the era of nuclear weapons...wars had to be fought with precision now...but he was assassinated; so we went back to the WWII style of fighting.
