On the Sinai god gave to Moses ten commands and wrote them himself on two stone tablets. These tablets were held in the ark. Moreover, It was the sign of God's presence for Jews. They couldn't make any image or sculpture of God, so tablets that he wrote by himself were the only object that could mean his presence. The only one Jewish temple built by Salomon in X century BC were built to keep the ark safe. Jews never had any other temples (only synagogues), except from the Tent of Meeting (i don't know if this name is accurate - its literal translation from my language) which was a portable temple used before Jews came to Israel from Egypt in XIV/XV cent. BC. I hope that this is enough.
