Christianity is believed to have arrived in Britain during the first or second century, and grew independent from the Church of Rome. The earliest historical evidence of an organized Christian church dates back to the early third century. The Church of England itself traces its history back to the evangelical mission of Saint Augustine, who arrived in England in the year 597 and established his church in Canterbury, becoming the first Archbishop of Canterbury. Augustine, being Roman Catholic, entrenched the denomination across the country; and the Church of England was under papal authority for nearly a thousand years. It was in 1534, under the reign of King Henry VIII, that England separated from Rome. A theological separation had been brewing through various movements in the English church, such as the Lollards; but political support came in the form of marital controversy. Henry VIII wanted to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, in order that he may marry Anne Boleyn. Catherine's nephew, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, pressured Pope Clement VII to refuse the annulment. In response, Henry VIII declared himself Supreme Head of the Church of England, breaking away from the papacy and claiming his marriage to be legally annulled. He was excommunicated by Rome for it. It is from this that the Church of England was truly and finally born; and to this day the monarchy of Britain remains as Supreme Head of the Church of England.
The Anglican Church was not founded at any time. It is a Communion, or body of believers, within the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. It is the Body of Christ within a given area. With Christ as the Head of the Catholic Church, the Anglican Church has in that sense existed for ever in the person of Christ, the Second member of the Holy Trinity and will by the same token exist forever as a Communion within the Body of Christ!
The purpose of its existence here on earth is to bring Salvation all men, by baptism and through the teaching of Christ here on earth.
Alternate Answer:
The Anglican Church was founded within Christianity shortly after the death and resurrection of Christ.
The Church of England was created because the king, Henry VIII, thought that the Pope had too much power in his territory. Therefore, he created the Anglican Church, and although it greatly resembles the Catholic Church, it is not.
The big impetus for Henry to split with the Roman Catholic Church was that he wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon, who could not give him a male heir. The Pope denied his anulment request; and Henry started the Church of England, getting rid of his old friend Sir Thomas More, to boot. Formerly, Henry was proud to bear the title "Defender of the Faith" and even wrote books extolling the Catholic virtues.
Henry was appalled by the Catholic church because they wouldn't grant him the divorce he wanted. He decided to create the Anglican church, a Christianity based religion between Catholicism and Protestantism
Henry the VIII wanted to form a new church for three main reasons -
1) The Pope would not annul his marriage to his first wife, Queen Catherine of Aragon (so that Henry could marry Anne Boleyn). This made Henry very angry, as the King was supposed to rule over his people by God's wish, therefore the (in Henry's mind) a King's wish was also God's wish.
2) The treasuries of England during Henry's reign were severly depleted and the Catholic Church held much wealth - idols, illuminated books, tapestries, paintings, etc. - which Henry could seize and add to his own coffers.
3) Henry the VIII was a socialist. The Catholic Church was very corrupt in the 14th century, and there was a lot of unnecessary superstition connected with the church. Henry (and in fact Anne Boleyn) both opposed the corrupt, superstitous and ritualistic practices of the Catholic Church, and wanted to "free" the English people from the oppression. Through forming the Church of England, Henry diverted much of the Catholic Church's funds to other uses, such as education and public health.
The Pope prohibited Henry VIII a divorce; so he "divorced" the Roman Catholic Church and established the Church of England.
