Marxism states that for a Communist Revolution to occur, a large extent of the working classes in the population of the country must be behind the whole idea, and instead of having leaders to make the revolution happen, it will be the whole Working Class (Proletariat) rising up together to overthrow the (current) form of government etc. However, the Bolshevik Revolution was a Coup d'etat, in that only 500 or so Bolshevik members, led by Leon Trotsky, made the revolution actually happen.
Marx believed that the industrialized nations would be first to choose communism, because millions of workers in dehumanizing and brutal factory conditions would unionize and revolt. Marx did not see that working conditions would generally improve over time and that unions would be successful in winning wage concessions, legal changes, etc.
Russia had little factory labor and industrial development. The country did not fit the Marxist model at all. The people who revolted were farmers, soldiers, sailors, police, doctors, mechanics ... nearly all types of people.
