Ok, first off, indigo was mainly a southern crop as youve stated already but tobacco was cultivated well into Pennsylvania since it was a very hardy and enduring crop. But to answer your question, these crops were mainly southern crops because of the climate. The warmer temperatures in the south allowed these crops to thrive very well. Another reason these were mainly southern crops was because most of the slaves worked in the southon plantations. This is why, in the civil war, the south fought to keep their slaves. The slaves were a major profit-make for the southern farmers because they could be forced to whatever without being paid.
