The defeat of Germany was the top priority of the Allies because it was believed that Germany's defeat would assure the defeat of Italy and Japan. The defeat of Italy or Japan would not necessarily assure the defeat of Germany.

To avoid fighting a full two front war. Those are hard to win. Much easier to put the most effort on one front first, then turn to the other. Also the Pacific offered a deep front that would take time for either Japan or the US to control, Europe offered a shallower front with a soft underbelly (Italy).

The fronts concentrated on in order by the Allies to defeat the Axis:

  1. North African
  2. Italy & Sicily
  3. Normandy
  4. Germany
  5. Pacific
  6. Japan

After WW2 the US War Department decided that they needed to be ready to fight all out two front wars, not just one front with mostly a holding action on the other.

We had to pick one or the other...so in support of Europe (and what was then seen as an easier objective to accomplish) the U.S. armed forces agreed to focus on the imminent defeat of Nazi Germany before focusing its effort on Japan's eventual defeat.

One front is always preferential in a war setting vs. two or more which effectively divide & diminish your own martial strenght & resolve.

The US joined the Allies after the Japanese attacked the US Navy at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The Allies devoted more resources to defeating Hitler because he directly threatened the Allied homelands more than Japan did. Germany is very close to Britain and Russia, while Japan is very far away. Plus freeing France from Germany's occupation would bring another Allied country back into the war.

Is top priority grammatically correct?

There is no grammatical issue here, simply an adjective and a noun. Be careful with the word priority. It means "precedence, especially regarding relative importance." The sentence "Such-and-such is the top priority" is not good. Careful speakers say "Such-and-such has top priority."

To this end, the Western Allies provided material assistance to the Soviet Union and engaged in a strategic bombing campaign against Germany until they opened the "Second Front" by invading Normandy, France on June 6, 1944. Meanwhile, they had tied down considerable German forces by invading Italy in 1943.

Why did hitler's reign end?

Hitler was defeated by the allied forces. The Americans, British, and Russian forces defeated him and took Berlin. As Berlin was being defeated, Hitler and his top advisers were staying in a bunker in Berlin. As defeat seemed inevitable everyone in the bunker committed suicide including Hitler (who shot himself) and his mistress so as not to be caught.
