To avoid fighting a full two front war. Those are hard to win. Much easier to put the most effort on one front first, then turn to the other. Also the Pacific offered a deep front that would take time for either Japan or the US to control, Europe offered a shallower front with a soft underbelly (Italy).
The fronts concentrated on in order by the Allies to defeat the Axis:
After WW2 the US War Department decided that they needed to be ready to fight all out two front wars, not just one front with mostly a holding action on the other.
We had to pick one or the other...so in support of Europe (and what was then seen as an easier objective to accomplish) the U.S. armed forces agreed to focus on the imminent defeat of Nazi Germany before focusing its effort on Japan's eventual defeat.
One front is always preferential in a war setting vs. two or more which effectively divide & diminish your own martial strenght & resolve.

Meanwhile, they had tied down considerable German forces by invading Italy in 1943.
