The Sydney Harbour bridge was a major feat of engineering that showed off Australia's skills to the rest of the world. It was, and still is, the largest steel arch bridge in the world, measuring 134 metres (429.6 ft) from top to water level, although it is not the longest. Up until 2006, it was also the world's widest long-span bridge, at 48.8 metres wide.

On an immediate and practical level, it was important to the people who lived around the city of Sydney as they no longer had to travel by ferry or the long way around to go between the north and south shores of Sydney Harbour.
